Legal Profession Uniform Law Application Bill 2020 (WA) introduced

30 March 2020

On 18 March 2020, the Legal Profession Uniform Law Application Bill 2020 (WA) was introduced into the Western Australian Parliament. The purpose of the Bill is to apply the Legal Profession Uniform Law as a law in Western Australia, bringing Australia another step closer to having a national legal profession.

The Uniform Law has been operating in NSW and Victoria since 2015 and currently regulates around 68% of all legal practitioners Australia-wide. When Western Australia joins the scheme this will increase to 76% of the profession nationally.

"This is very good news" said the Hon Michael Black AC QL FAAL, Chair of the Legal Services Council, "I would like to acknowledge the enormous amount of work that has gone on behind the scenes – by the Standing Committee and the WA Attorney General, the WA Solicitor General, the Council, the Uniform Law and WA regulatory authorities, our stakeholders, as well as all the professional bodies in Western Australia and our small Secretariat – all have worked together to help achieve this significant milestone".

The Legal Services Council looks forward to continuing to work with all parties in the lead-up to Western Australia joining the Uniform Law scheme.
