Barristers' work

2 September 2016

The Legal Services Council has made a minor but important amendment to Rule 11 (d) of the Barristers Conduct Rules to explicitly provide that barristers' work includes conducting mediation or arbitration or other methods of alternative dispute resolution as well as representing a client in these processes. The Council is pleased to make clear that, in addition to representing clients, conducting mediations, arbitrations and other forms of alternative dispute resolution is also the type of work that barristers perform. The amendment came into effect on Friday 2 September 2016. This rule change does not affect the ability of other professionals to undertake ADR work.
