Consultation on the Legal Profession Uniform General Amendment (Related Entities) Rule 2026

The Legal Services Council has published a Consultation Paper (PDF, 379.1 KB)to seek feedback on the draft Legal Profession Uniform General Amendment (Related Entities) Rule 2026 (Related Entities Amendment Rule).

The Related Entities Amendment Rule would insert a new Rule 7A into the Legal Profession Uniform General Rules 2015 prescribing related entities for corporate legal practitioners whose employer is not a company within the meaning of the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth) (Corporations Act).

The purpose of the Related Entities Amendment Rule is to address practical difficulties for corporate legal practitioners who work at non-company entities, arising from the definitions of “corporate legal practitioner” and “related entity” in the Legal Profession Uniform Law. The draft Rule would permit such practitioners to advise entities controlled by their employer, entities that control their employer, and entities under common control. The draft Rule provides that “control” has the same meaning as in s 50AA of the Corporations Act.

In developing the Related Entities Amendment Rule, the Legal Services Council has considered submissions made to our previous consultation on this matter from June-August 2026. Public submissions to that consultation are available on our website here.

Click here (PDF, 146.0 KB) for the submission template. Submissions can be sent to submissions@legalservicescouncil.org.au on or before 9 November and may be published on the Council’s website unless you advise otherwise
