The Hon Justice Matthew Howard

Justice Howard was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of Western Australia on 17 July 2023.

He graduated with a Bachelor of Jurisprudence (Honours) and Bachelor of Laws from the University of Western Australia and was admitted to practice in Western Australia in 1989.

He practised in litigation and then joined the Independent Bar in 1996, being appointed Senior Counsel in 2009.

While a barrister, Justice Howard practised in the areas of criminal law, corporations and commercial law, administrative and constitutional law, and general civil litigation.

He served as President of the WA Bar Association from 2015 to 2018, and President of the Australian Bar Association from 2019 to 2021.

At the time of his appointment, His Honour was an Acting Parliamentary Inspector of the Corruption and Crime Commission, Chair of the Legal Practice Board and Chair of Law Access WA. He is an Adjunct Professor at the Law School of the University of Western Australia teaching in Conflict of Laws.
